Fully 40% of Finnish students forego the academic track to learn a skill in their high school years.

in part because it is pretty hard to get into highschool (though the good/popular vocational programmes are really oversubscribed too -so very competetive!)

and in part because without some kind of further education you cannot get a job in Finland later on ...

"All students have free transportation"

False!

Childen living within a 3km/5km radius are expected to walk to school! (it is free for grades 1-2 and over) if the distance is more than that.

In the non-snow months many children cycle rather than taking the bus.

One thing that contributes to the trust thing is that Finns are trust-worthy and Finnish teacher put in an awful lot of time and effort (for relatively small salaries) irrespective of the school they are working in. There's not much snobbery involved.

Hi,

There is very little difference between the education systems (none of the points you mentioned are any different and neither is the culture, economy or really anything ...) in the four Scandinavian countries Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, yet Finland scores MUCH higher than the others on these tests. Therefore I think you have to look elsewhere for an explanation. Hint: Finnish (the language)

Is it possible to share a link to the film so educators outside of the USA can see it?
